Backed by a healthy beat, Terminator Shades encapsulates the controlled mayhem of the Primary School playground. As teachers we bear witness to all the chaos and noise, the complaints and injuries, the tears and laughter of our students at play.

It is also a chance to remove students from imported and irrelevant rap narratives. Terminator Shades allows students to rap about their own life and experiences on the playground as opposed to fast cars in Las Vegas.

By writing about the student’s experiences I’ve watched and listened as they have embraced this song with gusto, knowing that it validates their lived experience and through some neat rapping, makes their experience ‘cool’.

(The names have been changed to protect the innocent, but the stories are all true.)
